Student Awards

Buffalo State Awards and Scholarships

Description: The Dr. Charles A. Messner Scholarship provides scholarship funding ($5,000 annually) to student(s) with financial need and a declared major in the humanities.

Requirements: 

  • Be an incoming freshman enrolling full time (12+ credit hours) at Buffalo State 
  • Have a declared major in the humanities including the Communication, English, Modern & Classical Languages, and Philosophy and Humanities Departments

Semester(s) Awarded: Fall and Spring

Renewable: Yes, for up to three additional years provided the recipient continues to major in the humanities and maintains a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Description: The Stefano Moran-Guiati Memorial Scholarship was created to honor Stefano Moran-Guiati, a 2001 graduate of City Honors School and is available to graduates of City Honors.

Requirements: 

  • Be an incoming or current Buffalo State student*
  • Be enrolled full time (12+ credit hours)
  • Be a graduate of City Honors High School

*Preference is given to first year students who will take courses in modern and classical languages.

Modern and Classical Languages (MCL) Scholarships and Awards

Qualifications

  • Modern and Classical Languages Major
  • Graduate December, May, or August

Awarded to outstanding students in modern languages

Qualifications

  • Excellence in coursework.
  • Completion of four or more courses in same language area at Buffalo State

Awarded to students in the classics (Greek, Latin, or classical studies)

Qualifications

  • Excellence in coursework
  • Complete at least 2 courses in Latin or Classics at Buffalo State
  • Be a student of a modern foreign language based on excellence in coursework and completion of two or more courses in the field

Awarded to Professional French, Francophone Studies, or French Education majors

Qualifications

Be a Buffalo State student working toward one of the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Individualized Studies or in Arts and Letters with a concentration in French, or a minor in Professional French or French Language and Culture, or a World Language Certificate in French or Professional French
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher within the majors; and
  • Be in good standing with the college and the department

How to Apply

No application necessary: faculty select the recipient from those students demonstrating superior academic performance in upper-level French, and who will return to Buffalo State for the following academic year.

Deadline: February 21

Selection Committee: Department Chair and the full-time faculty within the French Department.

Disbursal: To recipient’s student account to be applied towards cost of attendance for at Buffalo State for Fall - Spring semester.

Stewardship Requirements: Student must forward a thank you letter to the stewardship officer addressed to Dr. Éliane McKee Foundation before scholarship is released.

Awarded to senior Spanish majors

Qualifications*

  • Declared major in Spanish
  • Undergraduate student
  • Senior status
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 in major
  • Must have completed at least 89 credit hours
  • Must serve as a model to other Spanish majors in demonstrating a serious and loving interest, passion, and enthusiasm in Hispanic culture both in and beyond the classroom

*Preference to students enrolled full-time
